Argentina’s goalless draw against Peru on Thursday places them in danger of not qualifying for the World Cup in four decades.
The little Magician “Lionel Mess” and teammates who had shown in previous editions of the World Cup qualifiers’, failed to get the full Capacity “La Bombonera” going. This resulted into Argentina slipping further down the South American qualifying table.
Argentina had an impressive attack as Dario Benedetto of Boca Juniors partnered Papu Gomez in his first full home debut, but were unable to break the stalemate.
Much of the opening stages in both halves were controlled by Argentina, but Peru showed character and held their ground forcing a goalless draw.
An effort by Papu Gomez flew just over the crossbar, while midway into the Game Lionel Messi came close to scoring when he connected a set-piece from the corner but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Final Game Against Peru
Their final away World cup qualifier game at Ecuador must not end short of a victory if they are to be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs for the competition.
In another game, a crucial late minute strike by Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal, helped Chile to beat Ecuador 2-1 and leapfrog Argentina in the World Cup South American Qualifying table into fifth place.
Whoever finishes fifth in the qualifying table will play New Zealand in a double-legged playoff in November. The teams to make it to Russia next year are only the top four teams in South America.
