On Thursday, the famous tech giant Facebook announced that it was introducing a location based tips feature for its iOS users. Called “Place Tips”, the new feature has been designed to offer users with tips and recommendations on popular locations and places nearby and these recommendations are going to appear on the News Feed section of the site. The company has also made known that the recommendations will also include nearby places visited by the friends of the users as well as pictures of the location, timings and even important details like a menu of the restaurant.

The new feature works by using a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile tower networks, to determine the location of the user and depends on permission from the user to access any kind of location information. At the same time, to protect the privacy of the users, the company has been careful over information about the location of the user not getting revealed or tips that users tap on get posted on their news feed when the feature is being used. Facebook has also said that users can turn off the location tips feature as well as keep recommendations about certain locations and places hidden as well.
“Place Tips” is still undergoing tests and is available at limited places
The new feature, the company says is still undergoing tests and is not available everywhere. It is carrying out test in certain areas of NYC specifically Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, JFK Airport, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty. At the same time, the company is also carrying out tests on its’ Bluetooth beacons at select locations namely Dominique Ansel Bakery, Veselka, Le Parker Meridien Hotel, Brooklyn Bowl, the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop and Strand Book Store in order to deliver better custom-made recommendations and tips to users.
