Since Donald Trump became president earlier this year, he has had virtually contact with his sons, whom he ceded control of his business empire to, according to Donald Trump Jr.

Speaking at a key fundraising event:

On Saturday, during a speech at a GOP fundraiser in Dallas, Texas, Trump Jr. said “I basically have zero contact with him at this point.”

Donald Trump Jr. and his younger brother Eric took the reins at the family’s businesses in January after Trump resigned his position but kept his financial interest. Government ethics officials stated that the move was not enough to address concerns about conflicts of interest.

On Saturday, despite the pressures of his new business role, Trump Jr. admitted finding difficulty in leaving politics behind, especially after having played key roles in both the campaign and transition

Dallas millionaire, Doug Deason, invited Trump to speak. He is also a prominent donor to wealthy conservative activists Charles and David Koch, as well as serving as a trustee on Trump’s finance team.

Trump Jr. spoke at the annual Reagan Day dinner in Dallas on Saturday, it was the first time he publicly went into politics since his father’s inauguration. The dinner is a key fundraising event for the local Republican group.

Conflict of interests:

In the past, questions had been raised by the role of Trump’s children in his administration. During the transition, his three adult children sat in on meetings with foreign heads of state while remaining closely involved in business deals overseas.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz also spoke at Saturday’s event, it was the first time he shared a stage with a member of the Trump family since the GOP primaries during which they clashed bitterly.

Trump Jr. told the crowd: “I saw on TV that [Cruz] had had dinner with my father earlier this week. Now I don’t even know if I have to deliver a punch line to that. But it’s sort of ironic.”

Trump Jr. took a swipe at his home state of New York which voted for Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton 59% to 36%: “Texas gave us the funds that we needed,” Trump said. “You guys get it. You understand the freedoms … so many of which we’ve lost where I come from in the peoples’ republic of New York … I can say that and mean it because I see it

He also praised his father’s success since becoming president, “I’m watching more take place in two months than I saw in two terms before,” he said.
