The defending champion of the US Open Stan Wawrinka has announced that he will not be playing in this year’s US Open because of an injury.

Stan Wawrinka took to his Facebook page to make the announcement that he will be having a surgery that will keep him off the court till 2018.

The Swiss player had to apply ice on his injured knee in Wimbledon as he was knocked out by Danil Medvedev in the first round.

He writes; “I love this game and I will do my best to get back in shape so I can keep playing at the top.”

This has not been the best year for Wawrinka as he lost in French Open final and was knocked out in Australian Open Semifinal.

He added: “I had a meeting with my doctor and team and although it was difficult to make, I need to carry out a surgery on my knee. This is the only way that I can keep on playing at the top level for a long time.”

“I am very disappointed but I am looking forward to getting back on the court. I am a big fan of this sport and I’ll do my best to get back in shape.”
