House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who is a major US Republican, was injured in a shooting during baseball practice a suburb in Alexandria, Virginia.

Two police officers who were involved in a shooting against the attacker were purportedly injured.

According to the police, a gunman was among five people who fell wounded and were admitted to the hospital.

Alexandria police tweeted: “Suspect is in custody and not a threat.”

The attack took place with the lawmakers were preparing for the annual congressional ballgame that was due on Thursday at Nationals Park, home of Major League Baseball team the Washington Nationals.

A potential massacre

U.S. President Donald Trump was quick to share an emotional statement to express sorrow towards the horrible attack and his adherent party.

In a statement, Trump said, “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer took to Twitter, asserting that the president is being informed of all the news and updates.

Senator Mike Lee, who is a Utah Republican, told Fox News that the former leader of the conservative Republican Study Group Steve Scalise, had been injured, but he is expected to overcome it.


Texas Congressman Roger Williams’ office said Mr Williams was not shot; however, one of his staff members was injured in the hip.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul told Fox News: “I do believe without the Capitol Hill police it would have been a massacre.”

“We had no defense at all. The field was basically a killing field.”

Ohio Congressman Brad Wenstrup, who was combat surgeon from 2005-06 in Iraq, told CNN the shooter eventually used a pistol after he ran out of all his rifle ammunition.

Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, was at bat during the attack, said that attack lasted for solid 10 minutes.

Mr Flake continued, “There are two of his [Mr Scalise’s security] detail were shot, one African-American gentleman shot in the leg and I believe he’s the one that brought the shooter down.”

“He ran around for quite a while with a leg wound, returning fire.”
