Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner was one of two officers injured as a gunman went on shooting at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, where Republican lawmakers were preparing and practicing for a charity event.
Griner, who was wounded in the ankle, and officer David Bailey, who suffered minor injuries, were serving as part of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s security detail. Both officers have recovered and left the hospital, and Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said Griner is now in “good condition.”
The shooting has left the gunman killed and several victims injured, including Rep. Scalise of Louisiana, news had been circulated about the two police officers and their actions during the shooting.
Officer Griner, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, was perceived as a hero after showing her bravery during the deadly shooting.
Comments By Trump
“Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault.” President Donald Trump said of Griner and Bailey.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump paid a visit to MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday, where they visited Officer Griner and her wife, alongside others, according to a senior administration official.
The two couples had a conversation for a few minutes, and the President expressed gratitude to Griner for her bravery. The First Lady then gave a bouquet to the pair.
President Trump was not the only politician to thank officers Griner and Bailey. Even Vice President Pence praised their actions.
“The courageous actions of Officer Crystal Griner and that of Officer David Bailey saved lives and prevented an even great tragedy.” Pence tweeted.
A number of citizens took to social media to call out Trump, Pence and Scalise — who remains in grave condition as they do not show much support to the LGBTQ community.
